Welcome from the President: Josie Thomas
The VMTA has a proud tradition of serving instrumental and vocal teachers and their students from all over Victoria, as well as the broader community. For almost 100 years, the Association has brought musicians together in a professional organisation, in order to help them achieve their teaching goals and to foster high standards in music education.
At the Annual General Meeting held on 27 March 2019, the members present unanimously passed the new Rules of Association. The major changes are as follows:
- The VMTA Council is now called the VMTA Board and the total number of Directors that can serve on the Board is now eight (8). The Board of Directors can include up to six (6) Member Elected Directors and two (2) Board Appointed Directors who may or may not be members of the VMTA. This allows the Board to extend its reach by appointing Directors from outside the Association who have skills and experience that will assist the VMTA in achieving its goals.
- Board Directors can also hold the position of President, Vice-President and Treasurer and these positions will be member elected at the AGM in the future. At the AGM, the President gives a summary of the Annual Report on the year’s activities and the Treasurer outlines the financial situation. Full reports are emailed to the membership prior to the AGM.
- The job title of the Executive Officer has been changed from General Manager to Chief Executive Officer. This position is part of the leadership team.
The Board meets monthly, and in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer, provides a range of services to its members, the music teaching profession, and the broader community. This includes events such as student concerts, masterclasses, and professional learning workshops, as well as advocacy and general advice on a range of matters relating to music and music education. Social events provide an opportunity to exchange ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment. Many lifelong friendships have been formed with this regular contact at such events.
VMTA offers a number of prizes for students, including the Kault Piano Prize, and the AMEB Grade 6 Theory Prize. Pedagogical articles and other articles of relevance to teachers, students, and parents are posted regularly on the Music and The Teacher Blog on the VMTA website, allowing information to be disseminated quickly. Our monthly eNews keeps members up-to-date on our activities and includes information about other events and exclusive 'member-only' offers.
VMTA members are publicly listed on our website and the 'Find A Music Teacher or Accompanist' function provides prospective students and their parents with reliable information regarding our members’ qualifications, areas of musical expertise and geographical area. Members are able to update their online profile at any time.
If you are a new member of the Association, I join my colleagues on the Board in welcoming you to the VMTA and I look forward to meeting you at various events throughout the year. If you are considering becoming a member, or are a parent or student seeking general advice about music or music education, please do not hesitate to contact us.
