Welcome from the President
The VMTA has a proud tradition of serving instrumental teachers, students and parents from all over Victoria. For almost 90 years, the Association has brought musicians together in a professional organisation, designed to help students and teachers achieve their highest musical standards.
VMTA Council comprises up to 12 voluntary members, with an Executive of President, Vice-President and Treasurer. When seats on Council become vacant, an election for new Councillors is held at the Annual General Meeting held mid-year. The President gives an Annual Report on the year’s activities, the Treasurer outlines the financial situation, and membership fees and recommended teaching rates for the next year are proposed and discussed. Council meets monthly, and in conjunction with the General Manager, organises many events throughout the year.
These events include student concerts for all instrumental and vocal students of members, masterclasses, workshops, and several two-day workshops each year providing professional learning opportunities for studio music teachers. Social functions are also considered an important part of belonging to an association, and provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and anecdotes. Many lifelong friendships have been formed with this regular contact at such events.
VMTA offers a number prizes for members’ students, including the Kault Prize, and the AMEB Theory Prize.
Our magazine Music and The Teacher continues to offer news, reviews, informative pedagogical articles and human interest stories relevant to the studio music teacher. This publication is now biannual, and we now also send out a number of eNews bulletins and additional email communication reminding members of any forthcoming events, concerts etc.
Our new website is a very exciting development for the VMTA. Here you can read about our aims and values, and get to know the Council. Our “Find A Music Teacher or Accompanist” function provides prospective students and their parents with reliable information regarding our members’ qualifications, areas of musical speciality and geographical area. The members are able to update their online profile at any time.
I join my colleagues on Council in welcoming you to the VMTA. I hope to meet you at various events throughout the year, as we share in our common passion of music education.
