The VMTA’s recommended teaching & accompanying rates are widely recognised by the music profession throughout Victoria. The below fee schedule is designed to be used as a guide by VMTA individual and school members, Eisteddfod organisers and members of the general public.
The rates are minimum recommended base rates, and do not include any on-costs such as superannuation, annual leave, or workers' compensation insurance. Individual private studio charges and school-based employment arrangements are subject to negotiation by either party.
The rates are revised once a year at the VMTA Annual General Meeting. Rate increases reflect annual CPI adjustments and may also take into account other factors such as national comparisons, industry standards and historical increases.
Only VMTA Individual Members & School Members may quote the VMTA Recommended Teaching & Accompanying Rates.
RESPONDING TO COVID-19: VMTA Recommended Rates When Applied to Remote / Online Teaching
We have received a number of enquiries regarding the VMTA recommended rates and our official stance on whether these apply in current remote teaching circumstances.
We strongly advise VMTA members use the recommended rates as they stand. We will NOT be adjusting these rates or providing special rates for lessons delivered remotely during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
There are several reasons for this:
- The rates are designed for instrumental music teachers who are members of the VMTA and have been accredited through recognition of their qualifications and experience.
The teaching they will undertake remotely will not decline in standard and any implications otherwise insult their professionalism and expertise. In fact, they will be required to extend their preparation and administration in order to develop resources and refine their pedagogical approach to suit this online format. Please note that non-members should not be quoting our rates.
- Principals, Department Heads, Parents, Students and other members of the community might reasonably assume rates be altered to reflect the online teaching scenario however we do not support this approach.
It may be difficult for people outside our industry to understand the realities faced by our membership. Instrumental Music Teachers who operate as sole traders, or are employed casually within school systems do not have paid long-service leave or sick leave which they can take during self-isolation, school closures or Government-mandated social quarantine. Without students in lessons there will be no income for teachers. Without payment of adequate rates, teachers are extremely vulnerable. Schools are cancelling their instrumental music programs without notice, parents are withdrawing their children from private tuition, and while some teachers are moving to remote lessons this is simply not feasible for all in our industry.
- While the recommended rates provide a benchmark, they are designed for VMTA members only.
Our rates are regularly reviewed and listed on our website following rigorous research and discussion. Non-members should not be quoting our rates. At any time, we welcome enquiries from non-members, including schools who are seeking to join and provide stability for their Instrumental Music Staff. We invite you to utilise the VMTA in the way it is intended: to support our membership, provide opportunities for professional learning, access information and resources and be part of our broader community.
