It is always most enjoyable to meet members and their partners at this social event where we toast our combined achievements for the year. A huge thanks goes to my fellow, hard working Board Directors and CEO, who contribute a great deal of time to improve services for members and music education in general.

We have achieved much in 2019 with the passing of our new Rules of Association and a comprehensive Board Handbook drawn up. We look forward to 2020, when we continue to review and implement our Strategic Plan.

Having Professor Barry Conyngham AM, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, speak about the developments thus far at The University of Melbourne's new Southbank campus, and what is envisaged for the future, added an exciting dimension. Opportunities for music graduates are expanding in many areas.

As well, Dr Grace Thompson, Senior Lecturer in Music Therapy at The University of Melbourne, spoke about the new Specialist Certificate in Inclusive Music Teaching. This much needed initiative offers a part-time course in special needs music education. The course will begin in July 2020 and will be run over two semesters. Enrolments are now open and full course details are available at https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/specialist-certificate-in-inclusive-music-teaching/

In the congenial relaxed atmosphere of the End of Year Celebration, it has been a tradition to recognize our new 'Forty Plus' Members who have reached their forty year membership milestone. Each person was presented with a certificate and spoke about their long-standing association with the VMTA and its benefits for them and their students.

The following members received a framed 40 Plus Member Certificate:

  • Margaret Baker
  • Rhonda Gale
  • Michael Smith
  • Rita Shallies
  • Gloria Jordan

Forty Plus members John Briggs, Judith Formosa and Veronica Rutowicz were not able to attend and will receive their certificates by post. We would like to congratulate all Forty Plus Members on their significant achievement and long standing membership.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year and look forward to meeting many of you in person at events in 2020.
