Individual Membership

To apply for Full, Associate, Graduate and Student membership please complete the online application form by clicking on the link below.

When completing the online membership application, you will be required to attach supporting documents such as qualifications, exam certificates and curriculum vitae. Before completing the online application, please see below for information about application requirements.

School Membership

***Available to VRQA Registered Schools and Commercial Music Teaching Studios***

  • School Membership is available to any registered State Government, Independent or Catholic school.
  • School Membership is also now available to private & commercial music studios that employ 1 or more teaching staff.
  • Teachers employed in schools who wish to be listed on the website will need to apply for individual membership. 

Affiliate Organisation Membership

  • Affiliate Organisation Membership is available to known organisations that would like to support and be affiliated with the VMTA.

Application Fee

A $50 application fee is payable prior to processing and approval of a new membership. This fee is fully refundable in the event that a membership application is not approved. If you have been a member in the past, please contact the office directly to enquire about having your membership reinstated. Please note a $50 re-joining fee applies for all reinstated memberships.

Individual Membership Applications

Referees (to be included on your application form)

TEACHERS

  • If you are applying for Full or Associate Membership you must provide 1 referee who can comment on your teaching skills and experience.
  • Referees can include an experienced music teaching colleague, current or former employer, parent of a student, or adult student.
  • If you are applying for Graduate or Student Membership you DO NOT need to provide a referee.


ACCOMPANISTS 

  • All applicants who wish to be listed as a Piano Accompanist must provide 1 referee who can comment on their accompanying skills and experience.
  • If you are applying for Full or Associate membership, your accompanying referee can be the same referee who comments on your teaching skills and experience. Otherwise a second referee for accompanying must be provided.
  • Referees can include an experienced music teaching colleague, current or former employer, parent of a student, or adult student.

We need the name, email address and phone number of your referee/s. We contact them directly for a brief statement in order to verify your teaching experience, and if applicable your piano accompanying experience.

Documents (to be attached to your online application)

Obtaining membership approval and listing your credentials on the VMTA website is an evidence-based process. The VMTA advocates high standards of music teaching, and our approach to approving membership and sighting credentials underpins our mission to advance quality music education.

Where applicable, the following supporting documents MUST be attached to your application as evidence of your credentials and experience (each file attachment must not exceed 5MB in size):

  • Transcript of results for any tertiary music or music education courses completed. Evidence of completion date must be included in the transcript.
  • Copy of practical or written examination certificates for any credentials to be listed on the VMTA website (e.g. Grade 8, Certificate of Performance, AMusA, LMusA – AMEB or equivalent).
  • In the absence of tertiary music qualifications, copy of certificate for the highest examination completed in the main area/s taught (AMEB or equivalent).
  • Copy of any teacher training certificates such as the Specialist Certificate in Inclusive Music Teaching (commencing at The University of Melbourne in 2021), Kodaly/Orff certificate, Suzuki/Yamaha accreditation, ABRSM (Instrumental Teaching), ATCL, ATMusA (AMEB). This is only relevant if you wish to list these credentials on the VMTA website and/or wish these credentials to be considered for Full Membership in the absence of a tertiary music qualification. 
  • A CV / Resume or brief dot point summary of your teaching experience.
  • If applying for Student Membership, a copy of your current university enrolment in a full time music course.
  • If applying for Graduate Membership, evidence of completion of your music degree or diploma.

Where tertiary music qualifications and examination certificates cannot be provided as evidence of standard reached, we will accept professional recordings of performances, or evidence of performance in a premier ensemble. Referees are also asked to substantiate teaching skills, experience and standard reached.

Criteria for Individual Membership

Full Membership (Full Accreditation)

  • Full members who wish to be registered as a teacher must have at least 3 years teaching experience.
  • Full members who wish to be registered as a piano accompanist must have at least 3 years experience as a professional accompanist.
  • Full members must have completed an approved tertiary course in music performance or music teaching. This could include the following: a graduate degree, bachelor degree, diploma of music, or any music qualification obtained from a recognised university or tertiary education institute (e.g. TAFE) (overseas equivalents will be accepted). 
  • The VMTA Board will accept general teacher training diplomas and music teaching certificates in lieu of tertiary music qualifications when combined with a minimum standard of AMEB Grade 8 Music Performance or equivalent. Examples of certificates include the Specialist Certificate in Inclusive Music Teaching (commencing at The University of Melbourne in 2021), Kodaly/Orff certificate, Suzuki/Yamaha accreditation, ABRSM (Instrumental Teaching), ATCL, ATMusA (AMEB), GradDipEd (generalist).
  • Please note that successful completion of a practical or written music examination at Associate or Licentiate level (e.g.  AMEB, ANZCA, ABRSM, Trinity College London) is not equivalent to a tertiary music qualification. 
  • Where tertiary music qualifications and examination certificates cannot be provided as evidence of standard reached, we will accept professional recordings of performances, or evidence of performance in a premier ensemble. Referees are also asked to substantiate teaching skills, experience and standard reached.

Associate Membership

  • Associate members who wish to be registered as a teacher must have taught their discipline for at least 1 year and have achieved a high standard in the main area/s taught, being a minimum of AMEB Grade 8 or equivalent.
  • Associate members who wish to be registered as a piano accompanist must have worked as a professional accompanist for at least 1 year and have achieved a high standard of piano performance, being a minimum of AMEB Grade 8 or equivalent. 
  • Where examination certificates cannot be provided as evidence of standard reached, we will accept professional recordings of performances, or evidence of performance in a premier ensemble. Referees are also asked to substantiate teaching skills, experience and standard reached.

Graduate Membership

  • Graduates must have completed an approved tertiary course in music and/or music teaching. 
  • Graduate membership is valid for up to 3 years from date of graduation.

Student Membership

  • Student members must be enrolled full time in an approved tertiary course in music and/or music teaching
  • Student membership is valid for up to 4 years from date of enrolment.
