To complete an online application for individual or school membership, complete the appropriate online application form below. For all other membership and subscription enquiries, please contact the VMTA office directly.

When completing an online membership application, you may be required to attach supporting documents such as qualifications, practical exam certificates and curriculum vitae. Before completing an online application, please see below for information about application requirements.

Please note that a $36 joining fee is payable on approval of a new or reinstated membership.

Application Requirements

Referees - to be included on your application form: 

  • If applying for Full or Associate membership, provide two professional referees who can comment on your teaching practice. This could be an experienced music teaching colleague or leading teacher at a school. If professional referees cannot be provided, parent or adult student referees will be accepted.
  • If applying for Graduate membership, provide one referee. This could be a former music teacher, university lecturer, or experienced music teaching colleague.
  • If applying for Student membership, no referees are required.
We need the name and email address of your referees because we contact them directly for a brief statement in order to verify your teaching experience.

Supporting documents - to be attached to your application: 

  • Copy of certificate/s for any tertiary music and/or music teaching courses completed. A transcript of academic results may be requested should we require further information about the type of qualification obtained.
  • Copy of certificate for the highest practical examination completed in the instrument/s taught (AMEB or equivalent). If you have a music degree or diploma that includes music performance this is not required.
  • Copy of any teacher training certificates completed such as Suzuki Teacher Accreditation, Kodaly/Orff Teacher Training, Cert IV in Training and Assessment. These will be considered in lieu of a music degree or diploma.
  • A current Curriculum Vitae (if available)
  • If a tertiary music student, a copy of your current enrolment notice
  • If a tertiary music graduate, a copy of your music degree or diploma

Criteria for Membership: 

  • Full members must have a minimum of 3 years teaching experience including at least 1 year of teaching in Australia, and have achieved a high standard of performance in the main instrument taught (minimum Grade 8 AMEB or equivalent). They must also have tertiary qualifications in music or music teaching (e.g. degree or diploma from a university or TAFE institution). Teacher training certificates will also be considered (e.g. Suzuki, Kodaly, Orff, GradDipEd, Cert IV in Training and Assessment).
  • Associate members must have a minimum of 1 year’s teaching experience in Australia and have achieved a high standard of performance in the main instrument taught (minimum Grade 8 AMEB or equivalent). Special consideration may be given.
  • Graduate members must have recently completed an approved tertiary course in music or music teaching. Graduate membership lasts up to 3 years from  year of graduating.
  • Student members must be currently enrolled in an approved tertiary course in music or music teaching.
