Referees (to be included on your application form)

TEACHERS

  • If you are applying for Full or Associate Membership you must provide 1 referee who can comment on your teaching skills and experience.
  • Referees can include an experienced music teaching colleague, current or former employer, parent of a student, or adult student.
  • If you are applying for Graduate or Student membership you do not need to provide referees.

ACCOMPANISTS

  • All applicants (including Full, Associate, Graduate and Student) who wish to be listed as a piano accompanist must provide 1 referee who can comment on their accompanying skills and experience.
  • If you are applying for Full or Associate membership, your accompanying referee can be the same referee who comments on your teaching skills and experience, or they can be a different referee. When providing more than 1 referee, your accompanying referee MUST be your 2nd referee.
  • Referees can include an experienced music teaching colleague, current or former employer, parent of a student, or adult student.

We need the name, email address and phone number of your referee/s because we contact them directly for a brief statement in order to verify your teaching experience.

Documents (to be attached to your online application)

Obtaining membership approval and listing your credentials on the VMTA website is an evidence-based process. The VMTA advocates high standards of music teaching, and our approach to approving membership and sighting credentials underpins our mission to advance quality music education.

Where applicable, the following supporting documents MUST be attached to your application as evidence of your credentials and experience (each file attachment must not exceed 5MB in size):

  • Copy of certificates for any tertiary music or music education courses completed (degree/diploma). A transcript of academic results may be requested should we require further information about the type of qualification obtained.
  • Copy of practical or written examination certificates for any credentials to be listed on the VMTA website (e.g. Grade 8, Certificate of Performance, AMusA, LMusA – AMEB or equivalent).
  • In the absence of tertiary music qualifications, copy of certificate for the highest examination completed in the main area/s taught (AMEB or equivalent).
  • Copy of any teacher training certificates such as Kodaly/Orff, Suzuki/Yamaha accreditation, ABRSM (Instrumental Teaching), ATCL, ATMusA (AMEB). This is only relevant if you wish to list these credentials on the VMTA website and/or wish to be considered for full membership in the absence of a music degree or diploma.
  • A Curriculum Vitae or brief summary of your teaching experience
  • If a full time tertiary music student, a copy of your current university enrolment notice
  • If a tertiary music graduate, a copy of your music degree or diploma

Where tertiary music qualifications and examination certificates cannot be provided as evidence of standard reached, we will accept professional recordings of performances, or evidence of performance in a premier ensemble. Referees are also asked to substantiate teaching skills, experience and standard reached.

Criteria for Individual Membership

Full Members (Full Accreditation)

  • Full members who are listed as a teacher must have a minimum of 3 years teaching experience and have achieved a high standard in the main area/s taught.
  • Full members who wish to be listed as both a teacher and piano accompanist, or an accompanist only, must have at least 3 years experience as a professional accompanist and have achieved a high standard of piano performance.
  • Full members must have completed an approved tertiary course in music or music teaching, which could include the following: a graduate degree, bachelor degree, diploma of music, or any music qualification obtained from a recognised university or tertiary education institute (e.g. TAFE) (overseas equivalents will be accepted).
  • The VMTA Board will also consider general teacher training diplomas such as the DipEd and various music teacher certificates in lieu of tertiary music qualifications, e.g. Suzuki/Yamaha teacher accreditation, Kodaly/Orff teaching certificate, DipABRSM (Instrumental Teaching), ATCL and ATMusA (AMEB). These certificates will be considered in lieu of tertiary music qualifications when combined with a minimum standard of AMEB Certificate of Performance or equivalent.
  • Please note that successful completion of a practical or written music examination (e.g. AMEB, ANZCA, ABRSM, Trinity College London) while an indicator of performance standard reached, is not considered a formal qualification. Full membership is evidenced based and requires a combination of high standard reached with tertiary music qualifications or teacher training.
  • Where tertiary music qualifications and examination certificates cannot be provided as evidence of standard reached, we will accept professional recordings of performances, or evidence of performance in a premier ensemble. Referees are also asked to substantiate teaching skills, experience and standard reached.

Associate Members

  • An Associate member must have taught their discipline or have worked professionally as a piano accompanist for a minimum of 12 months in Australia but is otherwise ineligible for Full Membership
  • Associate members who are listed as a teacher must have achieved a high standard in the main area/s taught, being a minimum of AMEB Grade 8 or equivalent.
  • Associate members who wish to be listed as both a teacher and piano accompanist, or an accompanist only, must have have achieved a high standard of piano performance, being a minimum of AMEB Grade 8 or equivalent. Special consideration will be given where appropriate.
  • Where formal practical examinations have not been undertaken we will accept the submission of recordings at high quality events or evidence of performance in a premier ensemble.

Graduate Members

  • Graduate members must have recently completed an approved tertiary course in music or music teaching. Graduate membership lasts up to 3 years from  year of graduating.

Student Members

  • Student members must be currently enrolled in an approved tertiary course in music or music teaching.
