An advanced piano masterclass with a difference for students preparing for AMEB Grade 8 and above or VCE Music Performance
Glenn Riddle and Elizabeth Mitchell will present an advanced piano masterclass with a difference. Both presenters will comment on each performance, joining forces to provide two views which will often be complementary. In addition, they will provide short introductory comments on each work, outlining social, cultural and historic factors affecting the composition of the music. Participants require a minimum standard of Grade 8 AMEB; VCE students are also encouraged to enrol. We hope you will be able to join us.

Glenn Riddle (Presenter)
Melbourne-born pianist/conductor, Glenn Riddle, studied at the Royal College of Music, London and at the Vienna Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst before returning to Australia, where he is now a Lecturer in Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne. Glenn has broadcast extensively on ABC FM and 3MBS FM, has recorded numerous pedagogical CDs for Allans Publishing and Hal Leonard Publishing, and was the Editorial Consultant for the AMEB's Series 15 piano publications. He performs extensively both locally and internationally, and is Artistic Director of the Grainger Ensemble chamber orchestra. One of Australia's leading piano teachers and mentors of young pianists, his students are prolific winners of competitions, having won major prizes in all major Australian national competitions, as well as international competitions.
Elizabeth Mitchell (Presenter)
Elizabeth Mitchell undertook undergraduate and postgraduate music studies at the University of Melbourne, leaving Australia in 1979 as recipient of the University's Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarship. She has extensive experience as a piano soloist and chamber musician, but since her return to Australia in 1983, Elizabeth has been chiefly occupied with teaching. She is an Honorary Senior Fellow of the University of Melbourne, where she teaches piano, and subjects within the Master of Music (Performance Teaching) degree. Elizabeth is an AMEB Board member (Victoria), State Chair of Teaching Diplomas, Chair of the Examinations Advisory Committee, and a Federal examiner for both practical and written diplomas. Elizabeth is a frequent adjudicator for Eisteddfods and competitions locally and interstate, and gives workshops for many organisations. Elizabeth has been actively involved with the Victorian Music Teachers' Association for many years and is a Life Member of the organisation.
Information for Performers
- Performers are asked to prepare material of no more than 10 minutes duration to allow sufficient time for commentary.
- There is a maximum number of 8 performers to allow time for each participant to receive ample feedback.
- When booking, you will be asked to provide the title and composer of the piece you have chosen to perform. If you are not sure which piece you will perform, you can confirm your program up to one week prior to the masterclass by sending an email to email@example.com.
- The program will be emailed to performers in advance and will also be available on arrival.
- We ask that performers and audience members stay for the duration of the masterclass to fully benefit from this valuable learning opportunity and to support others.
- Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the event in order to sign in.
Directions and Parking
If traveling by car, proceed to the main entrance of Melbourne High School (enter off Alexandra Avenue). There is usually ample parking in front of the school and around the oval. Alternatively, you can also travel by train to South Yarra station and take a short walk to the back gates of Melbourne High School. The path leads you to the front entrance of the school above the oval. The masterclass will be held in Memorial Hall which can be accessed via the main building entrance of Melbourne High School that faces the school oval. The hall is located just inside the entrance to the main building.
